February: The Mouth Care Box
“Once we believed that the mouth was a discrete entity with teeth and tongue, and that its care was the province of professionals. Now we know that cultivating wellness is an ongoing process, one that incorporates the idea of wholeness: if we harm a part, we damage the whole. Oral health is an integral part of our total health...Oral health can be achieved and sustained by adopting a safe, effective herbal protocol, in which herbs are used daily, both topically and internally, to affect systemic health." ~ Dental Herbalism
Dentistry has come a long way since the ancient Phoenician dentist pictured above had his practice, and regular trips to the dentist are important for maintaining good oral hygiene. But the care of our teeth isn't something that we should leave solely to the dental professional and the 2 or 3 times a day that we brush. Chronic inflammation, insufficient nutrients, dehydration and poor digestive health are some of the other factors that play a role in the health of our mouth.

February's box will explore healthy mouth care from an herbal perspective. Discover how astringent herbs like sumac, red raspberry leaf and oak bark are helpful for tightening loose, spongy gums. Learn about pain relieving, anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial herbs like willow and yarrow. Meet mineral rich herbs like red clover, nettle and horestail. Prone to cold sores? St. John's wort can help.
Products you may find in your box include a mineral-rich nourishing herbal infusion to support healthy teeth, an astringent herbal mouthwash, an after-meal herbal rinse blend to aid in the removal of biofilm buildup and restore pH, a tooth powder, a lip balm and cold sore remedy. The newsletter will cover topics such as remineralisation, oil pulling, chew sticks, proper brushing techniques and ways to incorporate herbs into your oral hygiene routine.

Boxes are offered with sliding scale prices. To learn more about sliding scale pricing, please read this post. But basically, in a nut shell (pun intended!), I invite you to pay one of the reduced fees, if paying the full price would cause you to be less secure in your ability to meet your food, health, housing or essential transport needs. To determine where you fall on the scale when choosing which price to pay, please refer to this infographic created by Alexis J. Cunningfolk (Click image to enlarge).
