October: Lore
Lore: noun "a body of traditions and knowledge on a subject or held by a particular group, typically passed from person to person by word of mouth" ~ English Oxford Dictionary
Human's healing relationship with plants dates back to around 60,000 years ago during the Paleolithic period, and the World Health Organization estimates that 80% of the world's population still uses herbal medicine as the primary form of healthcare. Herbalism is truly an ancient tradition and almost every culture around the world has developed a rich body of traditional plant wisdom and lore.
October's box will delve into some of this wisdom and lore by exploring the stories, legends and myths of common plants. Discover the origin's of yarrow's taxonomic name Achillea millefolium. Learn which herbs were used for protection and to ward off evil spirits during the Middle Ages. Read about which tree is associated with fairies and the gateway to the otherworld and which tree was sacred to the Greeks, Romans, Norse, Celts and Christians. Dive into the rich history of roses, which are so much more than the flowers of romance and Valentine's day.

Items I am planning for this box will include (with some possible changes or substitutions): a healing yarrow salve, a delicious elderberry shrub, hawthorn oxymel, rose elixir, a Happy Womb tea blend with mugwort, evening primrose and red raspberry leaf and an herbal mouthwash. The accompanying newsletter will be filled with tales and stories of the plants from different cultures around the world.
Boxes are offered with sliding scale prices. To learn more about sliding scale pricing, please read this post. But basically, in a nut shell (pun intended!), I invite you to pay one of the reduced fees, if paying the full price would cause you to be less secure in your ability to meet your food, health, housing or essential transport needs. To determine where you fall on the scale when choosing which price to pay, please refer to this infographic created by Alexis J. Cunningfolk (Click image to enlarge).
