July: The Summer Lovin' Box
"Summer is the time when one sheds one's tensions with one's clothes, and the right kind of day is jeweled balm for the battered spirit. A few of those days and you can become drunk with the belief that all's right with the world."
- Ada Louise Huxtable
From my vantage point on the front porch I have a picture perfect view of summer to gaze upon each time I take a break from my work and look up from my computer. The blue sky is cloudless. The wind moves through the silver maple and Japanese lilac. The penstemon and peonies are blooming in the garden. The hops has reached the top of the porch roof. Flickers and robins hop about on the lawn, ignoring the chipmunks and squirrels. The four baby groundhogs living under the porch are destructive, insatiable, but oh so adorable eaters of all that is green. I shoo them away from my echinacea. My dogs snoozes contentedly beside me. Days like this are indeed a jeweled balm for the spirit, battered or not.

Summer solstice, the longest day of the year is upon us, as are summer holidays, cottage weekends, camping trips, BBQs, picnics, beach days, splash pads, outdoor festivals, baseball games and soccer matches. And this month's box is all about celebrating and loving the warmth and joy that the right kind of summer day can bring. Make a refreshing iced tea with red clover blossoms. Cool down on the hottest days with an aromatic lemon balm hydrosol. Quench your thirst with a rhubarb and hibiscus shrub. Soothe bites and stings with a plantain bug bite spray. Sweeten up your life with a mint infused honey. Nourish yourself with a wild greens powder.
Boxes are offered with sliding scale prices. To learn more about sliding scale pricing, please read this post. But basically, in a nut shell (pun intended!), I invite you to pay one of the reduced fees, if paying the full price would cause you to be less secure in your ability to meet your food, health, housing or essential transport needs. To determine where you fall on the scale when choosing which price to pay, please refer to this infographic created by Alexis J. Cunningfolk (Click image to enlarge).
